Troops deployed and a state of emergency imposed ethiopias president moves to replace the Regional Governments in the troubled north. And in sports only going to social looks to pull themselves some breathing space as Manchester United manager is struggling to see just beaten every 3 warning in the english i mean really. Well it has now just gone 1500. 00 g. M. T. Thats 10 am on the us east coast and joe biden is slowly inching ahead in the race to become the 46th president of the United States right now he has a narrow lead over president in battleground states 4 days off to america went to the polls the votes are still being counted amid protests and several legal challenges by the Trump Campaign well biden has spoken in an address to the nation saying he is convinced that he will win he is ahead and. Pennsylvania nevada and in georgia now so far biden is projected by the Associated Press to have won 264 Electoral College votes trump has 214 the magic number acquired is 270 now that means that biden needs to win only one of the undecided states to get over the line we both know tensions are high the kid be high after tough election like weve. Already remember we have to remain. Patient that to precious work out as we count. You know were proving that weve 2 for 244 years in this country democracy works your vote will be counted and how hard people try to stop it i will not let it happen oh lets take a look at some of these numbers in pennsylvania biden is ahead of trump by more than 28000 votes a decision that could actually come in the next few hours the remaining mail in ballots are mostly from the democratic leaning cities of philadelphia and pittsburgh a win that would propel biden postes that 270. 00 mark while biden is also leading in georgia but only by just over 7000. 00 votes then an unusually tight race but officials in georgia say they do expect a recount as per the law of the state a candidate can request a recount if the margin of difference is within 0. 5 Percentage Points or we have correspondents across the country covering all of this for us tomorrow and joe bidens home state delaware alan fischer is following all the developments from the capital washington d. C. But 1st lets head to kristen salumi for the latest on that very crucial count in pennsylvania christine weve been getting these batches of results in recent dribs and drabs and i do believe another one is expected any moment in each of those could potentially be decisive here. Well i just spoke to an election commissioner here in philadelphia and basically things have been picking up again this morning after working around the clock all week officials here in philadelphia and also in pittsburgh the 2 biggest cities in pennsylvania did get to take a break overnight after working so hard this week but they do expect another release of data at some point today where it stands now as you said joe biden ahead by about 20 8000. 00 votes hard to estimate how many ballots are left to count right now were looking at a 150000. 00 plus in philadelphia here we know theres about 40000. 00 that have yet to be counted those include mail in ballots both those received before election day and those that are being contested by the president that were received in the 3 days after election day and theres also whats known as provisional ballots these are ballots that have to be individually verify it and it gets very tricky to do that the commissioners and Election Officials have to individually check and verify each and every ballot in those cases and just to give you an example of why that might be it could be that a signature was not on a mail in ballot or a mail in ballot was requested and then the person went to vote in person and didnt bring the mail in ballot with them so they voted provisionally so that Election Officials would then verify afterwards that they didnt vote why so this is a very time consuming and more tedious process and thats why were seeing the results come in a little bit more slowly and here in pennsylvania the commissioners for me that theyve got 18000 of those provisional ballots that they have to make. Their way through so he was urging everyone to be patient but promising that they would they would get another total out soon today kristen pennsylvania is also one of the state that has this hof percentage point recount threshold and were already seeing less a geisha and flying about so in your mind you think a truly definitive result could be some days away even months to get the number. Yeah i think thats a safe assumption given the legal challenges and as you say the race is closer than a half a percentage point its an automatic recount right now joe biden is ahead by point 4 percent so he hasnt reached that threshold yet and were seeing of course the president make legal challenges wherever he can including to ballots that were received after election day now this is a process that was upheld by the state Supreme Court here in pennsylvania ballots that were marked mailed by election day and marked by election day but received up till 5 pm local time on friday can still be counted according to a decision by the state Supreme Court but President Trump has been raising a stink about this and is hoping that the Supreme Court will again take that up on friday judge alito of the Supreme Court did order Election Officials to put those ballots that came in later a side that something that the state separate secretary of state here in pennsylvania had already asked them to do so whether or not they take up that probably depends on how close the final count is right now those late ballots seem to be a small amount we dont have an exact number but were talking about hundreds maybe low thousands which may not be enough to swing the race one way or another but if it gets really close this could drag on much longer kristensen i mean theyre watching that very critical count for us in pennsylvania thank you so much crystal now lets move over to the capitol and speak to alan fischer he is in washington d. C. By my understanding we havent seen President Trump since that very remarkable press conference on thursday night but it does seem from the statements coming out of the white house that they are turning it down what are his aides telling him right now. Well it depends on who you speak to on one side there are aides who think the president should acknowledge that essentially its over and that pennsylvania is going to put joe biden over the top and hes not going to be able to call that back and then there are others who are close to him particularly his children his advisor jerry commissionaire is also his son in law who very much advise him that he still has a path and if he wants to fight then there by his side certainly the tweet that we saw from donald trump in the last hour or so. Should scuse me suggesting hes going to continue to fight the legal battle he said that tens of thousands of votes were received in states after the 8 pm deadline what he means by that were not entirely sure of course in counting center sometime ballots do arrive after the pm closing of the pauls and thats because if youre in line at 8 oclock you get to vote and not only that the 1000000 ballots would have been delivered in pennsylvania in particular the Republican Legislature there said that those votes couldnt be counted until after the polls closed whereas before they had been processed before election day he also said that votes were not allowed to be observed hes raised a court action about that in pennsylvania just to quote the judge the judge asked the Trump Campaign was there someone who represented dog trump in the room and prevaricated a bit but then said yes theyre wards and the judge said. I dont see what your problem is and that is going to be the difficulty that the Truck Campaign in the republicans have in that they are talking about irregularities theyre talking about fraud but theyre not coming up with any evidence not just in the last half hour or so the Trump Campaign theres a notice that were going to have a News Conference in philadelphia that seems to suggest that theyre going to present some form of evidence but of course what theyre alleging is that tens of thousands of votes were either tampered with or delivered and thats whats changing the result. So if they have one or 2 cases theyre going to have to do better than not just to convince the public but also to convince a judge if we take this to court and i also see that now the man who is leading all those legal challenges around this election chief of staff mark meadows hes tested positive for kind of 19 is that creating even more chaos at the white house. Well you remember the mark meadows was the man who just before the election said that donald trump and the administration wasnt going to defeat the virus it was just going to contain it he himself has been seen on many occasions without a mask in fact there was a very Famous Exchange on capitol hill when he went to speak to journalists they asked them to put on a mask here a fuse and walked off yes he has been confirmed to be carrying covert virus apparently he tested positive on wednesday which is interesting because of course he was in the event at the white house that donald trump held on tuesday night he apparently wanted to keep this quiet to try didnt detract from other news at least 3 other staffers in the white house who also have the virus doesnt seem to be any change in the track interest policy of the white house so theyre not trying to find out who those was in contact with but this is embarrassing and not only embarrassing for mark meadows but for the president as well because you remember that before the election he said come november the 4th the day after the election the media isnt going to be talking about covert at all at the moment you hear this covert call record because they see that as a way to damage donald trump and israel lection efforts well in the last few days have been more than 100 cases of covert across the United States hitting new record levels that we havent seen since the early days of the virus back in march and know the chief of staff someone who stands very close to donald trump every single working day has no been tested positive so thats not good news for the white. Obviously not good for mark may do is in like everyone else im sure would like to wish him a speedy recovery not least because at the moment the president will obviously lead his support of course alan fischer there for us in washington d. C. The press conference that allen was referring to we will be carrying that live here on aljazeera bringing you all the latest thanks so much alan well lets get the view from joe bidens home state of delaware jamal shy our correspondent joins us now from wilmington jamal i was watching that that press conference that joe biden gave he was walking a very fine line there in his speech last night one that i imagine his whole team was hoping would be a victory speech. Well at least his supporters for sure and as they were separating not least because people are looking for some sort of closure although this isnt the 1st time the u. S. Election has dragged on your member back in 2000 the bush v gore one that went on for more than 3 weeks this time obviously tensions are not more high seems to be a lot more at stake and thats why maybe people are looking forward to it but in that press conference the confidence that joe biden has from the results that are coming in the trends in which those results are swaying towards essentially allowed him to focus on maybe throwing forward looking at what he would be focusing on over the next couple of months and if indeed he is announced as the victor in the beginning the early days of his administration well before talking about those policies there was a key message there to the entire nation and he did say he was going to be an address to the entire nation it was a message of calm a message of trying to come together and insistence that democracy was the way forward and it was something that is sacrosanct and must be protected and. An insistence that every Single Person who cross the ballots would have their votes counted obviously he would need everybody every single vote to be counted so he can win but he was saying that this is something that goes beyond politics it is the essence of what makes the United States the United States and therefore it is something that needs to be protected. You mentioned some of the policies and priorities that i 5 see that joe biden is already meeting with economic and Health Advisors essentially prepping his transition team. Well you know for sure i mean really you know he started off by saying hes just come out to him and his running mate who would be future Vice President coming out harris had just come out of 2 briefings one uncovered one on the economy and we heard there from alan when you were mentioning about the chief of staff of the white house getting caught with one of the it shows you the huge contrasts and there are many contrasts between biden and trump but particularly when it comes to covert many accuse the president of irresponsibility when it came to covert of him dismissing it as just in the early days as something that wasnt so serious and then since then not being able to actually grapple with it properly what biden has set out from the beginning is that he and his team and if indeed the future will be referred to as an administration we take it a lot more seriously would come up with a lot clearer policies obviously the way the which in which the u. S. Is governed there is some sort of autonomy in each state for them to deal with things differently there is a limit to how much the federal government can involve however just by leading by example so seeing the future president wearing a mask always as we have seen joe biden seeing them you know encouraging Certain Health and Safety Practices which we didnt see from the Trump Administration many believe that that would have a trickle down impact at least on the layman in terms of how an average citizen would be dealing with it and thats what many people are looking at this specially is because alan pointed out there for the past few days every single day theres been more than 100000 people who have tested positive for this virus so it is a real issue and the biden and his team seem very clear that they are taking it a lot more seriously than the Current Administration and are ready to get to work on it straight away to our correspondent on the ground in delaware with all the latest. Thanks so much to. Plenty more i have here this news hour including. Oh she was on the short list for Vice President meet the woman getting credit for the biden her a surprising success in georgia. And england enters its 2nd lockdown as a mass private Testing Program gets underway in liverpool. And in sport a big turnaround in the fortunes of australias National Rugby team and he will be here with that story for. Now one of the states that joe biden and chris appeared to have flipped is georgia where they lead continues to grow and that state hasnt voted for a democrat nearly 30 years but this year blackfriars has turned out in force thanks in launchpad to one pass and Stacey Abrams narrowly lost the race to become governor 2 years ago by just 55000 votes she accused republicans of widespread Voter Suppression doing everything they could to purge black voters from the rolls and battles civil Rights Groups and court about access so instead of running for Senate Abrams instead go to work fighting those efforts her organization registered approximately 800000. 00 georgia residents to voters well thats now speak to tony what can in the state capital into shes the deputy organizing director at the new Georgia Action Fund a Community Organizing group that engages under represented communities in the state attorney thanks for taking the time to be with us im curious the registration drives that state that the network the huge network that she built in your mind how much of a difference to me. First of all thank you so much for having me it made a tremendous difference so when we look at the margins that we see the state being turned blue by it is undeniable that the 800000 people that we registered and counting as we are still registering today. That that absolutely moved the needle because we know that the people that are registered are typically those that are not able to participate in elections due to Voter Suppression that is widespread in georgia so absolutely were excited and were so then over her leadership and her foresight in predicting that we would be able to do this tony were looking right now at an almost unprecedented level of polarization across the United States and youre out and about speaking to voters from different communities different backgrounds what was decisive for then it does seem despite what we all thought that the pandemic itself didnt make as much of an impact on voting choice and so what was the priority here. Well i think that 2020 has really has been a voting motivator in and of itself we see a lot of things just really coming to coming to their breaking point we see protesting in the street because we see people dying on television every day that look like us and were tired of that were tired of a criminal Justice System that treats our people and fairly black and brown and immigrant and queer and young people unfairly so i think that that coupled with cove it i think that there was just a massive reaction to we cant take this anymore and organizations like the new georgia project and the new director project action we have been having those conversations with people for years so while this seems like a surprise to many people this was a lot of hard work and a lot of strategy and we are excited that we have flipped the state essentially ahead of schedule right before the 2024 predictions but this is no surprise as because we have been putting this work in and talking to these people and explaining to them why the problems that they have are connected to their opportunity to vote only say that george is ahead of schedule didnt do you think that Georgia State is representative of a broader shift perhaps democratic or otherwise across america. You know not necessarily i think when we look at the the other states that represent the United States of america i think that it shows that we have a lot to do and let me not going to head it myself right we may have flipped the state in some respects but theres a lot of flipping to go we have 2 very major sooner races on january 5th to really important run ups that will help help predict that your jet jury georgia the state of the country and of course of the world so i dont know that im comfortable enough to say that georgia is predicting or is that an accurate predictor of the entire country but i do think its an accurate predictor of the trajectory of the country we all have a long way to go still and some big races still coming up as well in january tony what kens there the deputy organizing director of the new Georgia Action Fund thanks for being with us here on al jazeera time thank you and as we were saying earlier President Trumps chief of staff mark meadows has tested positive for the 19 and its unclear when he contract to the virus or if he has any symptoms several white house staffers including President Trump there have been criticized for failing to consistently when mosques in the white house and the u. S. Has seen another record in corona virus infections widespread testing has confirmed more than 132000 cases on friday the death toll now stands at 236000. Well as the wild battles a 2nd wave of corona virus cases europe is the new epicenter 300000 people there have now died several countries are imposing tighter measures to try to tackle the spread fronts has registered a new record of 60001000 cases just over 24 hours after going into lockdown a week ago now in greece the government there has imposed a 3 Week NationalLockdown People can only leave their homes if they make an official request by phone supermarkets pharmacies kindergartens and primary schools that can remain open now in the u. K. England and to its 2nd lockdown on thursday nonessential businesses there will be closed for a month and a mask over Testing Program has now begun in liverpool the trial encourages anyone living or working in the city to get tested even if they dont have symptoms well as watching all of this for us from london the team there was so much resistance to this 2nd lockdown in england hows it going. Well there are 3 more weeks of this lockdown across england it should be specified there are other measures in place for example in wales which are actually deemed as tougher including restrictions on peoples travel here in england the the latest hope is that a mass Testing Program in the city of liverpool in the northwest could actually see some progress the idea there is that all half a 1000000 residents are being offered free tests even if they do not have symptoms for profit 19 now there has been some uptake in the program but its early days Health Officials there stressing that they do think people are going to come and put themselves forward allaying fears among some people whove said that theyre worried that they might be mixing with people who actually have the virus this is all of course one way in which the all thirtys hope they can start to keep the economy going through the winter in the absence of a vaccine or a dilemma that countries across europe have theres another development here britain why the the government is now saying the normal resident foreigners in britain cannot enter the country if theyve been in denmark for the last 2 weeks that is because in denmark there has been an outbreak or there has been there have been cases of copied 19 linked to milk farms in denmark around 200 cases more than 10 percent of those with its believed a strain of covered 19 that has meet the World Health Organization says that in that the strains that have been found in these cases may have acquired what they call unique combinations of mutations there are several countries in europe including italy and. In which of also reported profit 19 outbreaks linked to farm gimmicks and there are millions of these animals a quarter call is going on in denmark right now theyre hoping to bring that swiftly under control but it of course raises fears for other countries around the continent now. There with all the latest watching developments for us around europe from london thanks so much to think im reading on and his parliament has moved to abolish and replace the Regional Government in the Northern Region of tikrit and salacious move between the federal government and to raise leaders amid growing concerns of a possible civil war charlotte thats reports the ghosts of ethiopias past linger into grey home to a powerful minority the tigre a Peoples Liberation front dominated ethiopian politics for 3 decades until Prime Minister abi arkham it came to power in 20 a chain they were allies now they preparing for war make a collision of this political ideological difference between the 2 but obviously there is no way that this problem could be resolved through why are. Hello again im a star and lets remind you of our top stories here this hour the president on a trump has fired off a series of angry tweets he alleges tens of thousands of votes were illegally received after the election deadline without giving any evidence he also says election observers were bad from the count has flagged those tweets as misleading. Democratic president ial nominee joe biden has addressed his supporters in his home state of delaware late on friday hes still not declaring victory but says he will eventually win this election biden also edged his supporters to be patient. And in the u. K. England entered its 2nd lockdown on thursday nonessential businesses will be closed for a month and a mask of a Testing Program is underway in the difficult. While a quick update now on the u. S. Senate race and control of the upper house also hangs in the balance and potentially could for some time and right now the republicans and the democrats remain deadlocked with 48 seats each both races in georgia already set for runoffs in january 2 others in North Carolina and alaska remain undecided well lets now speak to the executive editor of news guard james war and hes joining us from chicago james as i was just saying that we could be waiting till january to know whos going to control the senate we still dont know entirely about the presidency how is the country coping with all this uncertainty. Oh i think it would be fair to say a high decree of stress i mean i even have an 11 year old and 16 year old who are showing very little interest in Current Affairs and civics until the last week and now i cant get them up to bed at night because there he moved to cable news and even know how many alert morals there are in georgia florida and illinois for the 1st time in their lives. Well then let me ask you taking a bit of a step back care amidst all of this on 70 about perception the dismissal around this election i dont you what with combating misinformation i think youve been identifying socalled election misinformation super spreaders does President Trump fall into that category yes certainly a lot of his allies do and given his penchant to read tweet misinformation hes done a lot of that it says its been as basic as the plane that lies people are voting for dead ones and the votes that come in after election they dont count by mail there been 10 or 12 and the unfortunate thing is that a lot of them have a very very big audiences facebook and twitter are trying to do something to crow about misinformation and you know all the criticism they have received justifiably theyve done a fairly decent job the most high profile example being trying to curve the in the totally fallacious tweets of the president himself well we have seen some divides develop and the Republican Party so let me ask you ben what are trumps closest aides telling him who do you think is driving this narrative here. Oh i think largely his family and i think this is is pensioned is to turn to them his greatest loyalists. And some critics might say this is coterie of laugh dogs but theyre telling him to fight on fight on when the reality is look very different as moche as evidence by by example by the state of georgia where theyre still counting this is a very traditionally republican state 10000000 people hasnt gone democratic in a president ial race and bill clinton fell southerner in 1992 all the key statewide offices and both houses of the legislature are republican but so this is pretty remarkable theyve turned against trump and it looks like biden will win the state and then you have the wrong and one can on your story that enough with not one but 2 both Georgia Senate races going to run off in january and the eyes of the american political world will be on georgia in the next couple months an astonishing sums of money that wind up in georgia you should know your brothers certainly in broadcast television will be great beneficiaries so the job you really want to have you believe is there you want to be a general manager or the sales director of a television station and 10 or 2 of them we will leave alone james i do want to ask about the Republican Party itself because it really does feel like over the course of his presidency despite the initial resistance that we saw the Republican Party has essentially become the party of trump how much do you think that the g. O. P. Has fundamentally changed over these last 4 years and does does it revelant off them. Oh dramatically well over the caviar that if he loses this election and do remember yes more than 70000000 votes even in the air and defeat. That i think one can say when one looks at the end of a lot of elections across the american spectrum of the public and to well democrats not as well as they thought that surely trump is some form of something one might call trump ism one strong sell not and if he refuses to go down with a group graciousness and then basically announces that hes running for president 4 more years which is not involved early itll be really interesting to see how elected officials who are at this point still even now most elected republican officials are wary of criticism the criticism that have come about trump regarding his refusal to accept election returns is via a large bump from former elected officials so not a lot of political courage among republicans who are who are just very scared of him and dont doubt the possibility that he remains a significant factor in the partys life even their transition to joe biden and it looks like trump is and is here to stay for that a lot at least james warren there the executive editor of news god great to new insights here on out of there thanks for being with us james byrds.
