In washington really thinks that erdogan was going to go put it on harms way american troops which had been keeping their presence there very small contingent had been keeping this from happening so the president obviously feeling defensive but you just saw him there and over the last couple of days hes been trying to create this narrative and he came out he said with the cease fire pause he said its a great day for civilization i solved it sounded as if he thought he had solved the conflict between the turks between turkey and the kurds obviously thats not what this does and weve seen a lot of criticism people coming out and saying what the president did twice now is he told to turkey to involve it to go after the kurds and theyre saying that was a slap in the face of the kurds and theyre saying that he did it again with this agreement to the cease fire basically giving turkey everything they want so a couple of things in that brief roundtable with the media i think its important to point out he said the kurds are happy this is something he repeated from yesterday obviously not the case he said basically that the he went on to say the u. S. Has the oil in the middle east nobody has any idea what hes talking about but we know that hes said often through the campaign that he wanted to take oil from the middle d east so hes claiming because of this operation that the u. S. Now has the oil d and that the isis is double secured by kurds and turkey weve absolutely no idea what hes talking about there but it bigger admission in his little briefing to reporters he went on to say that no american blood has been spilled in this operation that i ordered when i did this that is a departure. He and his white house have been saying look he didnt give the green light he just moved us troops hes now saying i did this i gave the green light so the president obviously feeling the scorn feeling the controversy polls are coming out saying americans think this was a really bad call majority of them so hes doubling down and hes putting a narrative out there that he hopes his base will hear rather than what pretty much everybody else in washington say ok patty thank you for that update from washington. Heres whats coming up next on aljazeera protesters in libya send the message to the u. N. Accusing it and the world of ignoring their suffering. And houston we have a history its one small step for women as the 1st all female space walk is carried out and if the International Space station. Hello that touches have been steadily coming down across areas of the middle east is quite a bit of travis been streaming out from west to east in the last few hours and we will actually have the potential for head through the weekend mostly dry on saturday but about 37 celsius in baghdad 27 m. B. Rees and we could see a few showers with this sort of mass here across into will central and southern areas of turkey but its really sunday that we see this a bank of tab becoming a bit more extensive in pushing for the east with some very widely scattered showers across much of turkey pushing across into areas of iraq iran as well right there down towards the south a look at the temperature and baghdad 33. 00 on sunday so really feeling much better than it has been of late and those temperatures again continuing to sort of come down and steady across the mid thirtys throughout much of the Arabian Peninsula even a few showers reported so on thursday into doha as sunday is a similar sort of story again weve got to. Which is in the mid thirtys and the humidity levels are beginning to come down and sort of stay down at the same time and then we have got the chance of youve got the thunderstorms in johannesburg over the next couple of days a stream of cloud just to work its way to east of cape town it be warm no chance of any rain showers there and very woman johannesburg at 35. On the legacy of south africas a n c whats the boy made the quality or are these what is the plough how does gold take us. And how perceptions have changed of this former Liberation Movement turned government do you think is appropriate for a man who went to prison for defrauding paul im an eruption to run your politician. The hosam goes head to head with my leg embedded in it its not exactly been we. Get an agreement on. Hello again the top stories on aljazeera lebanons Prime Minister has given rival groups of his government 72 hours to uniting get behind his economic reform plans he addressed the nation amid mass protests that have left at least 2 people dead tensions world over when new plans were announced. Protest tourists have clashed with police during a 5th day of Pro Independence demonstrations in barcelona tens of thousands have filled the streets in the otherwise peaceful marches the mass so supporters for 9 catalan separatist leaders who were jailed on monday. Explosions during friday prayers at a mosque in eastern afghanistan have killed at least 60 people injured many more its still not known who was behind the attack the taliban says it wasnt that. Hes not sure if he has enough votes but britains Prime Minister is still confident hell get his brecks a deal through parliament on saturday or is johnson signed off with the e. U. On thursday describing it as a. Fair and balanced deal for both sides saying it will allow the u. K. To depart by october 31st as promised many other politicians even some allies say the agreements worse than the previous one they rejected 3 times and are simmons live in london outside the house is a problem and it will be interesting to see what happens on saturday andrew. They most certainly will this is the 1st Time Parliament in the u. K. Is sat on a saturday for 37 years and want a Massive Decision is going to be taken but its too close to call the situation really for Boris Johnson is that he has to look outside his party for support and where is he looking most well in actual fact the opposition the main Opposition Labor Party several m. P. s for that party are very pro back bracks it would vote along the rebel lines if needed so the calculators are out theres a lot more to be done from within the party itself there are 4 there are rebels 21. 00 who were disciplined earlier this year most of them have been wooed back onside were told and then theres the die hard bricks it hard liners within the party the 28. 00 of them also from the e r g they apparently have been prick ated and are on board but let me just bring in to this conversation Matthew Goodwin a professor of politics youre looking at the numbers is it clear too close to call because i think it is too close to call if you look at some of the estimates that a come out over the last hour they giving Prime Minister johnson a majority of just one or 2 based on the statements crucially as you mention of those labor m. P. s some of whom have been saying actually its toying its time to get the brakes a deal over the line but of course all it would take one of 2 of those m. P. s who has said theyre going to support the Prime Minister to abstain or go against the deal and then of course hell be headed for a defeat much inertia then over this but not necessarily the numbers but but what about this situation in that the the guarantee of a no deal brecks it isnt there is it because this is a procedure that starting with a meaningful vote then whats. To stop the hardliners from getting in their ordeal scuppering the whole thing and then finding a prang going to an accident and no deal breaks it all the chance of a no deal break said i still think its quite low for 2 reasons one is that weve already had the ban act be voted on the ban active effectively says if Boris Johnson does not have a deal in place by october 31st then there is an Automatic Extension which presumably would be granted by the European Union however along site that now tomorrow we have the letter when amendment in the morning which is effectively providing an insurance policy to ensure that if johnsons deal passes tomorrow and then in theory the ban act is redundant because he has a deal that he cant then just suddenly withdraw all the legislation and crash it could derail the whole process happening before the birth of the 1st well indeed one of the theories now is that if that let when amendment passes tomorrow morning in effect takes the potency out of this big vote on the deal tomorrow which could be delayed by a few days and if that were to happen of course then johnson would have to request a small perhaps a technical extension to allow him time to implement the legislation that would follow his folk tamara lets just just give up if you could answer this please in terms of say it happened say we had the chance and get this deal through it politically that changes the whole equation in the u. K. Doesnt it if it catches everyone out if force johnsons deal goes through and remember this is the 4th attempt to get a breaks a deal through the house of commons to resume a tried 3 times and was unsuccessful if this deal goes through it effectively puts a stamp on britains withdrawal from the European Union and the domestic political dynamics change considerably we will end up heading into an election soon because one other thing abortions and has of course is no majority in the house of commons. Because so many of his m. P. s have left so well still have an election soon which bars johnson will say i am the Prime Minister that is the livid brecks at the labor party the lib dems the scottish nationalists the opposition parties will then have to completely reorientate their campaigns because it wont it will no longer be a campaign to remain it will now be a campaign to rejoin. Thought there to ponder on thank you very much Matthew Goodwin feel thoughts back to you in the studio andrew thank you very much its. The United States has imposed 7 and a half 1000000000. 00 in tariffs on european goods french wine and scottish whiskeys are among the high profile targets the World Trade Organization earlier ruled that airplane maker air bus was receiving illegal subsidies rosalyn jordan reports. At the state dinner for president Emmanuel Mccall last year the white house served American Wine made from french grapes a year later the white house has imposed a 25 percent tariff on french wine made from crunch great ive always liked American Wines better than french wines. As britains Prime Minister sealed the deal on bricks that Boris Johnson is urging and please to support his new agreement to leave the European Union at the end of the month but will a divided Parliament Give its backing this is inside story. Hello and welcome to the program im so hell robin its crunch time on brics that again with less than 2 weeks to go until the u. K. Is due to leave the European Union Prime Minister Boris Johnson is giving m. P. s a stark choice its my deal or no deal he unveiled a new Withdrawal Agreement with e. U. Leaders on thursday now his predecessor turris a maze exit plan was defeated 3 times by unprecedented margins in parliament johnston says hes confident his deal wont suffer the same fate this is a great deal for our country for the u. K. I also believe its a very good deal for our friends in the e. U. And what it means is that we in the u. K. Can come out of the e. U. As one United Kingdom england scotland wales Northern Ireland together. We have to do to do. And so there is. Not an argument for the doing it should be just not the new agreement replaces the controversial backstop in former Prime Minister trees a maze deal but much of the rest remains the same the whole of the United Kingdom would leave the e. U. s Customs Union which means it can make trade deals with other countries but Northern Ireland will still need to follow e. U. Rules the Customs Border will be in the irish sea checks would be made at airports and seaports in Northern Ireland rather than at a land border while the island would still have to stick to the e. U. Single market rules but as a get around the Irish Republic and Northern Ireland would both be part of whats called an all ireland regulatory zone in Northern Ireland assembly will get a vote on the changes but that wont happen for another 5 years after the transition period is over well as Democratic Unionist Party a crucial ally in Boris Johnsons minority government says it wont support the deal we believe it is not in the interests of Northern Ireland either economic plan ive explained all of that around a border essentially for not just regulations but for goods we have different that rolls and we have no effect of consent over any of those really so all of that taken in around means that we cannot support the state Boris Johnson faces a tough job persuading enough m. P. s to back his deal chalons has more from london. So saturday is an absolutely titanic day of Parliamentary Business does Boris Johnson have the numbers to get his new deal with the e. U. Over the line get bricks it done as he puts it and avoid having to rights to the e. U. For that brics that extension well if he is going to do this now that he cant rely on the votes of the d u p the Northern Irish Political Party hes going to have to count on the support of the socalled spartans these hardline bricks it is to have voted against deals in the past hes going to have to rely on the support of former tory m. P. s former conservative m. P. s who were thrown out of the Parliamentary Party for defying downing street in recent months and he is going to have to rely on a number of rebel opposition m. P. s from the labor party defying their party and coming on to the side of the deal tranche of their numbers it looks as if he is still perhaps about 5 to 15 votes short of that 320 vote majority that he needs to get this done but dont underestimate the level of bricks it fits he in this country that might be weighing on m. P. s minds just get this thing finished with a move on and also dont underestimate the power of the possibility that several m. P. s might change their minds of the last moment possibly even the d p well have to wait and see what happens rory chalons for inside story. Well as well palau on this edition of inside story in london most say a Public Affairs specialist and former chief press officer to the u. K. Prime minister David Cameron in brussels. A policy analyst at the European Policy Center and also in london alan wager an associate at the Research Organization u. K. In a changing europe to all of my guess welcome to this edition of inside. Id like to just stop with the generic questions that our viewers understand where your coming from i mean to be or not to be part of the e. U. Depending on who you ask its now once again an important question and one that will be voted on by british m. P. s in the coming hours how important is it to be a remain a bricks a tear or a european who say lets have your initial thoughts i think initially now that its about being european i think we had a referendum the country has decided i campaigned for remained by was on the losing side but i dont think leaving the means you are any less of european and you cant cooperate on the big issues that face us or in brussels obviously a very different perspective from where you are now i agree that i think the most important thing is to be a european because even though our sons and seems to. Seems to go for a hard object said i think its really important to keep in mind that there are trade relationship will continue and some form of security and defense relationship or hopefully are to continue in some form because that is also in the interest of the e. U. So i think we should also look to their longer tom and to continue to good relations indeed we will look to the long term during this conversation and im wagering your thoughts about being a european a brigadier in the remaining. Well i think these issues have come to defy british politics for the last 3 is and regardless of what happens in the next few days theyre going to continue to define british politics for decades to come the issue of whether the u. K. And they have a close relationship will have a much more distant relationship will not be decided by the brits it till voted on in the next few days and as he says going to be an existential question is going to continue to divide british politics indeed 2 thirds certain its that we have to talk in hypotheticals about what might happen or what might not happen so. Lets begin with what the m. P. s have to consider in terms of cutting their ties with the e. U. Or are they still tied to the e. U. In terms of what the future relationship might or might not be i mean that will be debated in parliament in the hours leading up to this vote on saturday what happens if the deal is rejected know who say to me what are the initial complications or ramifications of a vote that goes against the Prime Minister. Well i mean from the governments perspective from the Prime Minister. That would be quite a big complication because he has repeatedly said that he would not ask for an extension which is now in law in the ben act that the u. K. Parliament has passed so then i think we are in slightly Uncharted Waters i mean if the Prime Minister does not ask for an extension then i think youre looking very quickly at. Either a legal challenge in the courts a resort a few weeks ago or you are looking at an election being called as a way of kind of ending this deadlock and i think for the other parties they will consider the next steps as well about whether they push a referendum for example and whether that changes any of the thinking or the numbers environment but this kind of slightly general approach from the government saying we will debate the law and yet who will not ask for an extension has still not been really clarified. And i think that will all come to a head tomorrow or indeed in terms of whether the vote does get its approval on saturday and wager its a done deal and if it gets approved the conservative party and the government continue to be in charge of British Government if the deal is approved on saturday as my says it will be a massive win for the u. K. Government Going Forward its still possible and indeed likely that by a to be a little bit of a further extension of article 50 to get the deal over the line into dot the is and cross the ts and get there with your agreement bill passed the trees you passed but it will be certainly a big deal for the for the government will be a massive vote of confidence in Boris Johnson and for Boris Johnsons approach to bracks said and it will mean as as as we go into a general election which is likely whether the deal is passed or not the persons will get a significant electoral and Political Base as a result and thats part of the reason why in these political calculations that. M. P. s because that has come as a making its a complicated decision for these m. P. s it is not suppose from a european perspective. European heads of government bureaucrats will either be exasperated if the vote is yet again rejected by the british parliamentarians all breathe a huge sigh of relief that theyve managed to finally find a way forward with the United Kingdom. Yes absolutely i mean for the e. U. The number one priority is to ensure an orderly withdrawal and avoid and notice now if so it would definitely be a massive would if the vote actually went through and if the Withdrawal Agreement was passed if it doesnt then i think the next big question is going to be an extension i think there was very little desire in the e. U. To draco of this process even starts but at the same time that you doesnt want to be the one responsible for triggering nobody is so. Even though i personally think it might be quiet headphones for the u. K. To in a way for the e. U. To in a way put a gun to the u. K. Parliaments head and rule out any extension to make a truce between this year and no idea i dont think about what the u. S. Going to do when and when push when it comes to tough and that the big question will be how long an extension would last so whether it would be a lot of thought extension of maybe 3 or 4 weeks just enough to organize a general election or that would be a long one maybe until next summer and whether what sort of conditions would come attached indeed is all ifs and buts at the moment until the vote happens. Because then youre not doing it agree with but can i also to i think your agreement is that has there been enough time to actually look at this deal thats been so hastily pushed through while many people have compared it and said its very close to to resume a steal it is under house obviously several changes which weve mentioned at the top of this program is it enough time for m. P. s to digest the small print you know it is very similar to the deal that has already been presented to parliament so i think many of you kind of scale even further by the referendum was 3 and a half years ago and m. P. s have been debating this for that amount of time so i dont think any of the ideas in there are particularly new or will be very challenging for m. P. s to understand. And i think this this kind of ties into the frustration that people do across the u. K. Do feel with members of parliament in terms of their you know actually being able to agree a way forward but actually being very good at what showing what they dont agree with and what they want to oppose i think this is part of the thing to look out for and part of the problem for the votes on saturday you know theres lots of opposition m. P. s invitees saying theyre going to vote it down but actually thats only half the story you what is the kind of parliamentary sweet spot almost where where will the numbers actually agree and coalesce to show people including our e. U. Partners what will get through parliament and when louis was talking about an extension and i think probably you know some kind of technical extension i can see happening will be quite sensible but i think even from the e. U. Side giving an extension is not a blank check you know the e. U. Have been marched twice up this hill now of agreeing a deal with the u. K. Government for it to be voted down and lets see what happens tomorrow so ive just not sure we can keep on going back to the drawing board without the e. U. Getting a sense from parliament as to what will actually work and what will get through not just what we dont want to do well talk about the extensions well in a little bit later in the program just because i want to sort of bring in you talk about all the hurdles that have to be jumped to the think there is also is aware of these hurdles but if i go back to alan wager in london i mean there are other elements at work at the moment you have the s. N. P. In scotland table in yet another motion with the with in the high courts about an immediate extension to the october 31st deadline and youve got an empty brick city a can of campaign joyland more also in the scottish courts saying that the division in this deal of the Great Britain part of the deal and the separation of Northern Ireland cannot constitutionally be allowed so youve got these a. The act was the act of 2018 the cross border trade act these are still mind fields for Boris Johnson because he has to keep an eye over his shoulder as to whats happening in scotland or to certainly he knows how the politicians in Northern Ireland feel about this deal so its true to say that theres divisions across the country on on the deal but i think as we get towards. What is essentially a political decision the role of the courts and the role of legal Decision Making is going to have to subside this is going to be ultimately a decision about politics in the house of commons and as may said people need to make making some decisions about what they want Going Forward so thats why i am peace hope to give Boris Johnson a clean vote on his deal tomorrow can it get through parliament or not and then thats where other campaigners say that it has been failed tried and failed to get a deal through the house of commons 33 in our 4 times really then other options such as referendum can be put forward but this is potentially Boris Johnsons 11 time shot at getting a deal through the through the house of commons so the deal scenario weve set in stone here inside story. Give us a sense really of the political thought in brussels and maybe with the european colleagues that your speaking to about you know how exasperated or how happy or how confused they are with the way this whole breaks that process has started may be may end this weekend because as far as i was concerned of the 1st day it was its really is the end of the road for him because there is a new transition of cd a european politicians coming to take over from the likes of john claude younger and his team. Well it may be the end of the line for drunk loads him come but its certainly not the end of the line for the entire except close as i think im quite the opposite were really only Getting Started because lets not forget that the Withdrawal Agreement was supposed to be the easy bit the much more difficult bit the negotiations about a trade agreement the future relationship thats still to follow and i think thats going to keep everyone very very busy over the next few years but to give you a sense i think that is a lot of this baby excess full ration i think god still in the e. U. 27 i think there was a lot of dismay about the u. K. s decision to leave because it was a very important partner fund many for all of the other human must say its. Very it brings a lot to the table especially in our security and defense so i think it has a real loss for the e. U. At the same time i mean of course this close us has dropped out quite a bit its i think a lot of people thought that it might go a bit more smoothly and that there would be less im also from the u. K. Side so i think the house been a sudden exasperate in about the way that the u. K. Government has handed these notice ca sions and also i think and one of the u. K. s in a way. And decisiveness. So is syria i think its its a little bit of both dismay at the excessive delays and mix. It in terms of the research that you do with the way the british people feel about the 2060 referendum and the 3 year process that we sort of lady coming to. The way they feel about bricks it right now what is the thought process because various. Polls give a barriers opinions about where people stand the way they did vote the way they might vote the way they could vote so if you also more it will in the street do you want bricks it be done than to be a more than likely to see. Absolutely want to get breaks it down and move on to other things but when you dig a little bit deeper and ask do you want your preferred outcome do you want your 2nd my friend and do you want your. Bread set or whatever people do you still have really really strong preferences and ideas about what they want and people are still really really divided on these bricks and options so we say a small majority in favor of remaining in every single poll has been conducted in the last couple of years but again huge divisions in the country about what breaks it should mean so. Although although people are exasperated by bricks it although people who are so they are a bit since he is by the whole breaks in process it is really defining peoples politics and defining politics in britain indeed lets give our International Viewers a little bit more background to that because of course a majority of britons voted to leave the e. U. As weve been discussing in that referendum 3 years ago 52 percent of voters back to leave 48 percent to remain polling surveys over the past month suggest that voters havent really changed their minds 86 percent would repeat their choice to leave while the 88 percent to back to remain say they do so again so therefore most who say that leads me perhaps neatly to a potential hypothetical general election and of course during the referendum itself issues of immigration were high on the agenda as were health those issues i would say are have disappeared but have moved to one side because we weve had more debate on the irish border the backstop trade investment even finance are we going to go back to those very hot issues that raise temperatures in and around the United Kingdom if we head to another election would brek see it as the main one and only topic of discussion for another action. I think we were and i think to extent thats already happening you know the u. K. Government for the last few months under Boris Johnson has been talking a lot about domestic priorities like the National Health service like Education Funding like more police on the streets because the people around him who are campaigners know that this is the kind of bread and butter these are the bread and butter issues that people will vote for and people care about so yes breaks it you know will still define there are other things as well and there is a sense of bandwidth being taken up by breaks and you know when i was in government in the home of is a lot of our time was focusing on breaks in relation related issues to the detriment of other things that we could have been getting on with as well and thats the case for colleagues and former colleagues in all other Government Departments so breaks it has been taking a lot of time and thats where you keep on hearing this kind of get briggs it done mantra so then people can focus on the other things that they want to see improved and unit things that affect their day to day lives so i think this is very much the election footing and i also think actually in terms of getting the deal through on saturday the optics are just as important as the substance here so yes the u. K. Government and the e. U. Have you know let it be known they worked very hard to get this deal through and i think the government definitely wants this to pass but if it doesnt pass it actually gives the u. K. Government another reason to try to highlight parliaments inability to actually agree or decide a way forward and actually then push for an election again which people in the government are not against so it could be kind of a win win situation in terms of that word used that was very interesting bandwidth used within the talking in government corridors certainly breaks it has taken that much of the band with within the e. U. Because it has other things to worry about other things. Wants to complete and it has been distracted for 3 years with bricks if we talk about accession to the e. U. There are 2 countries North Macedonia ukraine who want to join also this talk about the European Army hasnt really been discussed in depth because brecks it has taken so much more time leaders in europe really do want to try and find an end game to this dont they so they can get on with business. Oh absolutely i mean. Of course all there was the things you just mentioned that has been less progress than the might have been without breaks it to our top talent as for that you really would dissolve more attention than theyre currently getting like migration. The slowing economy and several countries including johnny and also that use relations with actors like the us. Tacky at the moment so the way they are a lot of issues i think are completely overshadowed by beck said but at the same time. I think rex it is also given the news some new impetus so for example on the fence corp it is quite i mean im not entirely sure that the e. U. Would have gone ass 5 in starting. A new program a new sort of initiative to cooperate test for the promise for fed cooperation if it hadnt been for the your case vote to leave so its a bit. Yeah its quite its not a very clear picture in this regard but definitely effects of its overshadowing a lot of other topics indeed very briefly at the end of the program because the people youre speaking to the people that you do your research with in terms of the dare i say boredom factor tired factor just hard enough factor you know the brits at heart you know there are really great people who are going to vote they dont like elections whether its local National Even european where do you think the british people will stand when it comes to this election and this particular topic as a top electoral issue to get his deal 3000 commons then that completely changes the political picture if he fails and hes attempting a deal that hasnt got it through that is hugely exposed to knowledge of for raj the brakes of party germy code so this vote tomorrow will come to define the Electoral Choice that the that. That people make in the next in the next few months is going to be a really really important focus it it provides the context about whether we have breaks it finished in some sense whether its still a live issue in an election and that will complete define what happens indeed we will see what happens in the house of parliament think globalize will be on there certainly on saturday to all of my guests know hussein. Also ahead turkeys president warns the offensive in syria will resume and intensify if all the terms of a truce still arent mats and peace and with all your support protests in the council and region of forced old allies is to cool off real madrids match at barcelona well hear from real coach soon it is a day in the program. 72 hours thats the deadline given by lebanons Prime Minister sahadi to rivals and his governments to find a solution to the turmoil thats engulfed the country well how did he address the nation after canceling fridays Cabinet Meeting hes looking for support for his Economic Reforms now nights last fall and on lebanon after sometimes violent protests against new toy. Reforms entered a 2nd day at least 2 people are dead the countrys in the grip of a severe economic crisis and opponents accused leaders of losing lebanon into bankruptcy or the protests or the most serious challenge to heidi these governments which came to power less than a year ago life to be ritually after this reports from sarah. Thank you ok gun fire in northern lebanon. Border guards to a former politician apparently opened fire in the city of tripoli the shooting goes on for a while. Oh and the injured off ferry to hospital. Moments later protesters burned down a bus station owned by the politician was tension too in the lebanese capital beirut was holds for revolution and bring down the system are being echoed across the country was never nice from all walks of life protesting all mass for a 2nd day fed up they say with the high costs of living and demanding a change of leadership here today thats what our rights that country is what i meant and that garbage is all over the me why fed up with all this is why he put the future of our kids theres no future for god no jobs at all and this is not acceptable anymore and we have stepped up all the time and now its time to talk to the protesters blocks major roads foresee parts of the capital to come to a standstill. Security forces and protesters scuffled on the main road to the airport years of crippling economic crisis has left many lebanese struggling to make ends meet made worse by political upheaval and the cost of caring for one and a half 1000000 Syrian Refugees who fled the war. The latest protests began on thursday against government plans to charge users of the Whatsapp Messaging Service the outcry forced the government to quickly scrap that plan but the anger has turned into a nationwide protest against the dire state of the economy. 7 on has the 3rd largest debt in the world more than one and a half times its g. D. P. Banks Russian Foreign currency long. Month and the government declared a state of emergency but none of these im a mormon a lot of we want the downfall of the regime all the way from the top of the pyramid we are hungry we are dying we are tired. The government has announced it will no longer impose new taxes Prime Minister saad and heidi the cancelled fridays Cabinet Meeting saying his efforts to bring in much needed reforms have been repeatedly blocked by others in government but job or im giving our partners in the government a very short deadline 72 hours to give us a solution that can convince us and the people in the streets and our International Partners but some protesters see the climb down as too little too late. Aljazeera lets bring in stephanie decorous is joining us on the telephone from beirut tell us what youre seeing stephanie and how widespread the protests remain. Well i can tell you i just arrived from the airport and it was quite a journey the only way i literally just arrived in downtown beirut and the only way i got here is because our cameraman picked up his motorbike all the roads are blocked there are burning tires you cannot get to the airport with any kind of vehicle people are walking people are missing their flights all the roads in the area 9 are also blocked with burning tires burning rubbish there are young men on the street the closer you got to sort of the downtown area a lot of you know people motorbike flying the lebanese flags when you really do get a sense of the city has come to a step till and as you mentioning and also as you heard cited report there is something very different happening here everyone you speak to and you know that this is a country that is very much divided when you scratch the surface along sectarian lines along cost divisions as well but this is the people really seemingly coming together and pointing the finger even at their own politics to give their own sectarian lines which usually in the past they would be someone they protected theyre now saying we need change one of you are responsible for where we find ourselves in this has to do with quality of living that have to do with the economy has to do with people paying extortion the amount of education for their kids the water selectric you see they say that nothing really functions in this country theyre blaming the politicians could be incredibly corrupt and having been in these positions for too long and not doing anything so as you mentioned there yes youre hearing from 5 how do you from the foreign minister youre hearing language give us time were going to come up with reform but people now really do want to see change on the ground i can tell you i would ive spoken to certainly do think that these are unprecedented protests and they dont know really how these things are going to unfold moving forward and whats been the reaction after saddam had even the speech because many of the protesters as well as politicians in fact had been calling for him to come out and resign which he didnt do but whats the reaction from what people heard him say. Well people are waiting to see some kind of ball result and people are saying that words are no longer enough they havent left theyre still protesting thousands are still on the street story so it hasnt been a form of the peace and if you will i think people will be willing to see what is going to happen in the next 72 hours but a lot of people i think it lost their trust because its been years of promises of broken promises stalemate when it comes to politics here this country was a without Prime Minister for ages people have really become i think fed up with the bickering of those that they see are far more privileged than they are you will talk to people and they will say these are men millions in their pockets these are men who live far better than we do and its time for them to pay for the desperate situation that we find ourselves in so i think its going to be interesting to see this is of course the weekend now if these protests are going to continue i think the sense on the street certainly from what ive been thinking too is that they will continue people now feel there is a mentor and they want to see some results ok stephanie thank you for that update from beirut lets speak to kermanshah shes an assistant professor of Public Administration at the university or by richard joining us from there via skype thanks very much for being with us on the aljazeera news hour so when the Prime Minister says i give you 72 hours who exactly is he addressing this to was a 72 hour ultimatum geared towards. Yes thank you for covering this story you know were a small country but its been a very eventful 2 days and i hope that your reporter got in ok and will stay safe and the protests and the protests number one have been overwhelmingly peaceful the violence has been police as to get there then theres been tons of tens of what that says that have been detained and whose names we cant disclose right now so this has not been an a revolt thats been a violent revolt and its not been certainly instigated because of the taxes on telecom and whatsapp this has been a long time in the coming lebannon has one of the highest cancer rates in west asia we suffer from an Environmental Crisis an economic crisis violence against women we suffer from major problems and housing and. Fiscal problems and so this has been seemingly spontaneous but its been in the its been in the buildup for several years and several months. The 72 hour. Deadline that the Prime Minister has issued today is mainly to buy time this is how people on the streets read it and its not sufficient to address the deeply needed Structural Reforms that lebanon has been avoiding since its civil war ended 3032 years ago so ok it sounds like youre saying that nothing can be accomplished in 72 hours because these issues are so deep rooted in lebanon and have been there for many many years so after 72 hours where does the situation had to. Now you are saying in the introduction around and around you know increased poverty and the challenges because of their for the refugee crisis you know lebanon doesnt have any reason to be poor it is poor and on managing bill and unbearable because of the mismanagement of this Political Class and i think that whats been happening has been extremely and president and weve never seen this people from all over the country not just the city in 2015 we had similar protests happening but they were happening mainly in the city this is the 1st time we see people from the mountains down to the south of lebanon saying you know we cant take it anymore you are all to blame for the mismanagement the failure the corruption these are structural problems and theyre the result of the deals and the regime and the system thats come about since the end of the civil war and the level of awareness i mean ive been on the streets for the last 6 hours the 11th of the level of heightened awareness of peoples and anise of the system and of there is an important issue as were saying or these are people from a certain Sectarian Party and the guys were shouting back no were not friends of the Sectarian Party or this to put our you know paid off from a certain region from such a country because they know were not being paid off this is a genuine outcry the end of which we are yet to see you know with all the geopolitics in the region but certainly its been a Tipping Point this has never happened ever before not in this size and certainly not in this distribution across lebanon across ages a clubs classes i think people have had enough but when they call for the resignation of the government is that a realistic demand can be a country with stand the resignation of a government thats less than a year old. So 1st the demand about resignation of the government and here i think the media has an Important Role to play its not that it is not this government when we say a scott of the list got an exam and i dont know were talking about resignation or the downfall of there isnt people are talking about a new way of representation they are the noun 6 sectarianism they are the now seeing their leaders theyre not that backing this government per se it is the mandate and the common vested interests of all the politicians who are seemingly polarized lebanese population against each other who are in bed when it comes to the economy or in bed in terms when it comes to elections and partisan answers this is what the people are demanding a lot and for the resignation at a time when its just a self not the specific government but they are calling for the resignation of the Prime Minister himself you know when you have hundreds of thousands of people go to the go down to the street its very difficult to say oh
