Those are your headlines on the back with more news had on aljazeera thats after the strain stay with us. Facing realities growing up when did you realize that you were living in a special place the socalled secret city getting to the heart of the matter the myanmar government calls you a gringo the terrorist hear their story on talk to aljazeera at this time. Ok and you are in the stream today the stream at sundance we are kicking off a special series of shows from the Film Festival in park city utah with a look at the documentary chi lash so grab some popcorn ill enjoy. The making i guess a. Family. Hit over the movie i was telling. The International Labor organization estimates that there are one hundred fifty two million child slaves with half of those children working in Hazardous Conditions this sobering statistic is a reminder of the real price of consumer goods around the world its also one of the scenes in the documentary film kai lash opening at this years sundance Film Festival the movie tells the story of Nobel Peace Prize winner kai last that the r. T. Was on a mission to end child slavery in india my cohost make a bailout joins us live from the festival in park city utah with more. Hi femi youre right i am here in park city who are at the sundance Film Festival been on more than thirty years and im on main street really this is the heart of the festival and of course i am joined by two people who are very integral to todays discussion who were as you mentioned he and his team have helped rescue more than eighty five thousand children from child slavery but he says thats not enough and his mission is to put an end to global child slavery so here to discuss his quest and the documentary south we are speaking with. You can join us here go and derek welcome to the stream and gentlemen its so good to have you so this film opens pretty caringly with a very dramatic intro scene that takes us right to the heart of the action and operation and were with you doing im going to show it to our audience in just a minute but describe what theyre about. To see. The holes to. Try. To keep. It also going to see all children so. It didnt seem to change the world but theyre also going to see. Is going to be willing to see the biggest of the. Burn to see why this is all that im going to do it and im going to see the end of it in my life so theyre going to see many things through my friend that they dont need i like that you heard it here first so before we go on much further take a look at this clip from. There with. One child is in slave time for me the one does not free and that is an evil which i want to end in my lifetime and i mean to tell you ive been. Terry of course what our audience just saw something you were familiar with because you are the filmmaker behind it youre right there with the lash and his team capturing pretty intimate moments are there any barriers to getting that on film because of course were talking about children here of course you know we were closely were kind to this team they really from day one brought us into their world and worked very closely with us to give us the access that we needed to tell the story and we just couldnt be happier with their participation in allowing us to do that but how whats the process like for you in talking to children for a documentary film but in the end will further the goal of indian child slavery presumably by you know its their day to day lives and these are kind of the worst moments of some of their lives of course i mean we had to be delicate and respectful but it was really just about spending time you know we spent three months there. Really just living with the kids knowing when to turn the cameras on when not to i think that was one of the most important things i want to share a tweet now from our audience this is from sanjay and he asks whats your source of inspiration for doing this work. This one to you first what what drives do you. Think would be more this us than the freedom the gift of all. This model freedom of us on the for yourself which i had with my feet i think that im seeing myself. And that is the biggest inspiration for me that you sing the manager who does student i feel that this is a small victory over slavery and one by one. We are getting to that point this needs to be over how did you get to that point though because clearly its started been angry it started with you seeing something that needed to be changed how did you funnel that into action. It was to them by a deep rooted compassion. Because i feel connected with the suffering both those children and i also need to change that suffering as my own something. That is of course theyre trying but then to come to know about all they tried to has been missing from the family and the mothers coming off my gold and sometimes just sitting and they didnt put us to do something then we have to start finding that child and once we find the child working in the factory audit in their mind then they go Program Video chip in begins to move thats very dangerous i dont have a good links with walsh i could talk bad and one must be done with that im sorry i was caught on on my board and most of my phone wait wait ok so youve got scars on his body but he said so nonchalantly your your skull was cracked your backbone was broken if i have that correct so i mean these are the that this is dangerous work this is tended us but somebody has to appear to accept it as a challenge and if not me who can do that has all this been the philosophy of my life if i believe in something i have to act keep on watching and saying no no no no goals would just laugh and please someone and want to just a History History is clear to them divide them. Jump into the ring without putting too much for the faith to it all sexes so i believe in that so whenever these bins come to those and the rescue operation thats all that is dangerous right up to be but he could afford in fukushima but its a good accomplishment one once and thats just me and jack i want to hear about your inspiration then for hooking up with via this tweet we got this tweet from sparkle she is a member of our community who writes on twitter how will these raids shift the ideology behind the need and the enforcement of child labor keeping in mind that there are so many factors behind this and some of them unfortunately are families who are in need of money. And see this as a route to what was it that inspired you to then get into the same dangerous work that was doing there i mean were storytellers and we care passionately i care passionately about this issue but want to tell the story through the ones who watching his amazing work so you know for us its about telling those personal stories and hoping that those connects to audiences so its a really inform them about the larger issue and make them care was there a moment in particular because of course youve been doing this for a while you were newer to this that really struck you when you met a child or circumstance that you got into that you think our International Audience should be aware of a little tease for your film i was really surprised to learn that the kids who were being rescued often were really scared of being rescued because theyve been brainwashed. You can speak a little bit more to this but they are if theyve been brainwashed to think that were there to steal their kidneys sometimes torture them kill them take them to jail so often instead of this wonderful joyous celebration theyre very frightened and the work that his team do is incredibly inspiring because they have to earn their trust in an instant how do you do that. Also. Seen that somebody will come out right now but imagine soul its sunday that lovin and the sense of perfection that you have to see it but then to see that somebody is genuinely trying to help them all its a total shock for them aside but thats all for them but then they also see that many most of them are being feed on them to come to washington but they have to disincentive more comfortable but it takes time because they have all this being exploited and abused. They dont understand. So. Then you dont is all that is if it shouldnt but im very happy to say that you have been able to do it through my organization and my colleagues. That. It does expose and. Theres a scene in the film and this isnt a spoiler but theres a scene in the film where you are with the kids and youre saying we are three news network which of course many people in our audience will recognize i am free and i think its just that such a powerful moment for kids to internalize so i thought that was beautiful and speaks to what youre saying i want to throw to another this is another member of our community and talking about a take away from watching this documentary and of course from the good work that has been doing this is benedict who asks how can people support your campaign or of course at the end of the film there are ways you put in waste but what would your takeaway for our audience be i mean we want people to be aware about the issue to see the movie to talk about the movie to share his work to be more Conscious Consumers you know. So many of us go to the store not thinking about the things that we buy and i think if we can raise our collective voices take this pledge talk to our friends about it and be loud about the things. Were buying companies will have to take notice youre sparking a Global Movement how would you encourage people to join him not Global Movement i agree with him that if you. Keep on buying and using the word its made by. The. People in that it but if the keep on buying and using. Them to do it to do this crime that has to end. This work is the boys to do them because weve given up one of the most problem could be seen and sold a nice addition to his local watering maybe go ahead of them made the decision and so as they sort of started saving in child labor if it didnt all go to spawn stupidity of these cities and who believe in humanity to. Break the silence to begin with and then secondly i call upon my audience to join my hundred million four hundred million one hundred million young people that the victims why the same thing and so on but on the other hand i know hitting people all across the water about you to pick up that one take the chilean go and make this one of a better place so why cant we get them over towards a hundred million young people should become the champions and should be one hundred million. Of them and of course our team will be tweeting that out on a. J. Stream so look for that i mean back to you thanks so much money what can you cut. We have. A real one right now imus says it is heartbreaking kids working so hard missing the joys of a normal childhood and this very pointed to a mock met spiritus take one movie were not and challenged. But he does shine a light on the issue while movie derek what can this one movie did. Oh it can do Amazing Things i mean we see it time and time again starting with Inconvenient Truth which was made by. My friend and mentor and producer on the film we started a global conversation and we really hope that this movie can start that global conversation and yes its not just the movie we are storytellers but again if we all collectively join in the offer and demand transparency and say enough is enough absolutely. So many more in the film go online. Look here there is an entire class you can find about the film where the showings might be and also how the International Community to help. Thank you very much good luck with your premiere in a few hours time well have more familiar in just a little bit but how can we the International Community make a difference joining us to talk about this and we have director of child labor issues and the National Consumer and in chicago Kerry Kennedy shes a board member at the. Childrens foundation and the president of the robot kennedy Human Rights Organization welcome. There is a potential that for people to watch. That happens in india it doesnt happen where i live all my continent what would you say well we actually do have child labor here in the United States most child labor has disappeared but in agriculture we have hundreds of thousands of children who migrate with their parents and they work in the fields and they make almost no money they work under very harsh conditions and its dangerous work and you know they can do it at age twelve which is i think most apparent americans would be astounded by us law allows them to work at age twelve and actually allowed to work on limited hours as long as theyre not missing school they can work on limited hours in the fields which i think most americans would agree is just wrong and needs. National Labor Organization comes the stats here on any given day twenty six danes thats the last time a they looked at the Data Collected the data children aged between five and seventeen years and can see the percentage going around the continent going around the world how many children are actually working carry for you why is this such a critical issue today oh many things going on in the world that we need to address why this one child labor. Well you know children are our future we have a responsibility to them to make this a world does just attend freely and there are one hundred fifty two Million People children in slavery or child labor at the moment survey of americans twenty sixteen the seventy five percent of americans as made that there were under one million children in slavery or child labor worldwide and impact there one hundred fifty two million so i think thats an issue that all of us have or ability to know and to learn more about and i think the film is great for that and the point is absolutely correct you do not need a path to be connected to these issues and the coalition of a mock leave workers in south florida has over one hundred over fifteen hundred slaves in the United States nevertheless fifteen years in the agriculture field and we have been very involved in sex slavery so in most nations of the world when a child is continuously great theyre brought to an end geo t. V. By the government and theyre rehabilitated in the night and its were almost unique in that we propped to that child fourteen fifteen sixteen seventeen years old call her a prostitute and send her to jail so theres a lot of work we can do and just one other area which is in chocolate seventy percent of the chocolate consumed in the United States is made by children in slavery or child slavery so basically every time you eat if its in chocolate youre touching something that has to chop plate. Read let me share this tweet its from a benny of benny hes talking about some realities down on the ground people on the low end of the income generation do get their kids to whole commodities even before going to school in the morning to support the Family Income generation but what could they do really chip set down if they would have no income what do you want these families to do well you know we realize that families are often desperately poor that their children to work but our experience has been that a lot of families when they make that decision theyre not very well informed about the consequences of child labor because child labor and child workers are somewhat different and child labor is more intensive and more exploitive and it requires more commitment as far as hours and it is difficult to square example well you know so child work generally is under twenty hours a week and you know not dangerous. Its when we see children working more than twenty hours are we going to interferes with their schooling and their grades and their completion and school then we become concerned. So yes youve lost some because we said show us what the reality is i know youve been out in the field as well took us from some of these pictures why did you want us to see this well i you know i think kerry was absolutely right that there is a lack of awareness about this issue and theres also a kind of like feeling that well this is just what kids do in other parts of the world it doesnt really harm them its just what theyre used to and our experience has been a lot of child labor is very damaging to the children and its hazardous work children are often using machetes and other dangerous equipment and carrying burdens they cant bear there are small bodies cant bear theyre exposed to pesticides and all kinds of chemicals and we find you know educationally there and the impact is massive so we see a lot of harm being done to children through child labor and child slavery terry at the end of the film kind. Ash in the credits there are messages about what we can actually do to end lobel child labor one of the messages was do your part want to show you something here from the Guardian Newspaper it says as a headline admit it you love cheap clothes and you dont care about child slave labor calling us all out in the developed world as citizens of compassion also say products from china are sold worldwide at such an inexpensive cost due to the exploitation of children this is somewhere where you cannot just walked and understand and learn about child labor but maybe we can actually be doing something of wise i mean being complicit. You know i may not i think you know there is some very simple thanks all of us can do to make a difference so i hope in my computer form letter and anybody can do those saying do your blank i purchased a. Three pairs of pajamas and three sweaters that your store last week for twenty two dollars can you tell me. What youre doing to protect your supply chain and making sure that nobody is being exploited. Every simple its very straightforward and you can just have that and send it out i mean it doesnt mean you have to stop consuming in a way that youre used to because you dont know maybe they do have a great protections but you can start to ask the question and as more and more people start out questions it will make a difference i mean theres only one state in the u. S. That requires corporations to talk about what theyre doing to stop these problems to reduce them thats california and we would like to see other states adopt that model and wed like to see a federal law that requires Large Companies to talk about their efforts to prevent child slavery and child labor the child a few says hair on the chip so again live on you tube right now people need to find out the products that are made by tell slaves and stop using them until they stop using slaves we the people have the power to stop it we do but you know i just i would i would. Offer a cautionary tone is fairly difficult to tell like what specific products are made with child labor you know the u. S. Government has identified one hundred thirty different commodities that are produced by child labor but they dont produce a list of goods that are assembled with child labor. It takes a little bit of work and a little bit of investigation by consumers and i totally agree with carries and kai lashes remarks about commune. Getting with companies you know we can go to their websites we can look at their c. S. R. Statements we can see if you know how socially responsible they are and how theyre how theyre tackling these problems and we can write them emails and say im really concerned about this and if if youre you know if youre not doing enough on this problem im not going to buy your product to show at the end of the film i want i dont like to add to the show its not just you its a. Something in a store on you. If you have investments in companies if you are part of an Investment Scheme you you can have your Pension System as her pension being invested and how are we making sure that none of the companies that our pensions are being investment got and carry carries a oh i dont want your college and development union. Make sure that our staff im sorry kennedy and i read mackey thank you very much for joining our conversation about the the issue in the campaign to end child labor around the world thats find out more how to get involved check out stop child labor dot org or ask a human rights dot org now back to make of out in park city for more about the stream at sundance serious money what are we getting up to next week.
